Former Tempelhof Airport, Berlin

Initial situation:
With its remarkable history, size, architecture and downtown location, the former Tempelhof Airport is one of Berlin’s most important attractions. More than 100 tenants from various industries, from police presidents to dance schools, are based in the old airport building. The approximately 300 ha large adjacent Tempelhofer Field, the old taxiways of the airport, is now available to the public for intensive leisure use and enjoys great popularity. Since the beginning of 2015, the site has developed into a new urban quarter for culture and creative industries.
BRAUN Lighting Solutions also made a contribution: At a logistics access to the site, outdated suitcase luminaires were to be converted to LED technology and restored beforehand, including the masts, to meet the requirements of historical preservation.

Customer request and order:
The client, Tempelhof Projekt GmbH, wanted full service: Dismantling, restoration and installation including the commissioning of the listed existing luminaires according to the specifications of the preservation authorities.

The solution from BRAUN:
After dismantling the existing luminaires, the elaborate restoration of the listed suitcase luminaires and a two-arm mast was performed. All work on the luminaires and on the mast combination was carried out with the necessary care and in accordance with the specifications of the preservation authorities. The suitcase luminaires were equipped with cityLED modules and now illuminate the new logistics access road to the former Tempelhof Airport with state-of-the-art lighting technology from BRAUN.
Both Tempelhof Projekt GmbH and the responsible preservation authorities are enthusiastic about the result and expressed their gratitude with a letter of references.
